Why FORM Follows FUNCTION! |
 |
FUNCTION: what is it?
Every website has several functions.
Does it sell your product?
Does it explain your policies, procedures, and credit terms and conditions?
Does it emotionally appeal to me to cause me to "do something" in response?
Does it capture the visitor's email through a legitimate opt in method?
Does it send mail to those who request information?
Does it track your site visitors behaviors such as entry point, exit
points, how long they visited, what times of day they visit most, what
day of the week is you most busy weekday?
Does it calculate an order of many products or services?
Does it stream audio or video or both?
Does it play on demand audio or video or both?
Does it display newsfeeds, weather, times of the day?
Does it countdown to a certain date?
Does it showcase a gallery of photos?
Once your scope of functionality (SOF) is defined, can your design and
navigational schema be created. Once a designer knows what you
need the site to "do" then, he or she can design the site around that
functionality.
A website is like a fine watch. The result you see when you look
at the face of the watch depends entirely on the fine-tuned
functionality and methodology used in building the watch.
To end up with a site that meets your expectations, your designer must first know what you expect.
